Events
Fremantle, as a port town, has a strong and long standing connection to the nation's war history. It is with great pride that the City of Fremantle works with the greater Fremantle community as well as the Fremantle RSL to host a number of ANZAC Centenary commemorations and to have the opportunity to honour and pay respect to those who have and are serving our nation as part of the Armed Forces. The following Events Calendar is a list of the confirmed events and activities that will take place as part of the ANZAC Centenary commemorations in Fremantle.

Remembrance Day 2017

Remembrance Day 2017

This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead.

The mayor and the councillors of the City of Fremantle extend an invitation to the public to attend the annual Remembrance Day Memorial Service at Monument Hill Memorial Reserve, High Street Fremantle. Assembly at 10.45am for service commencement at 10.55am.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

 

Join us for a moving ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Fremantle War Memorial, Monument Hill at 5:50am, Tuesday 25th April 2017.

Two large screens will be installed behind the monument so that all attendees can clearly see the service on the cenotaph.

An additional screen is being installed this year further down the hill on the High street side to increase viewing areas.

Expected conclusion of the service is approximately 6:30am.

Gather around Fremantle’s first war memorial for the North Fremantle ANZAC Day service organised by the Fremantle RSL, Bicton-Palmyra RSL and the North Fremantle Amateur Football Club.

1914, WA Diggers Depart: Blackboy Hill to Fremantle and Beyond

The upcoming event will recreate the journey taken by Western Australian troops from the training camp at Blackboy Hill, near Mundaring, to Fremantle Port.  A service will be conducted at Blackboy Hill followed by a commemorative service in Fremantle at the Port in front of the Maritime Museum.

The State President is pleased to announce that the 99th RSLWA State Congress will take place on 9 and 10 October 2015.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

In addition to traditional programming, towards the end of the service 12 permanent plaques will be unveiled; four on the north, south and east sides of the Monument. These plaques will forever display the names of Fremantle's 849 fallen soldiers and sailors from World War One.

After a brief address from Mayor Brad Pettitt, enjoy a hot meal in Kings Square as we commemorate the meal taken by soldiers and sailors prior to a morning battle.

The Army Museum of Western Australia, housed in the Artillery Barracks on Burt Street, Fremantle will open for visits from the public for ANZAC week.

Fremantle City Library proudly presents ‘At the Going Down of the Sun’. Timed to coincide with the anniversary of the 1914 departure of the 11th Battalion, it is a moving performance based on the book Secrets Mothers Keep written by local author Linda Bettenay.

Black Diggers

Black Diggers

One hundred years have passed since the Great War yet some stories remain untold – Black Diggers is one of them. Through interweaving vignettes, an all-star cast of male actors tells of the hundreds of dispossessed Indigenous soldiers who heard the call to arms and stepped up to fight for Australia on the battlefields of Europe.

Concerning War, Considering Peace

In MAPW's Concerning War, Considering Peace event Dr Holbrook looks back, at how the Great War is remembered, and asks how many Australians persist with the fiction that the nation was born on 25 April 1915. Melissa Parke looks forward, contemplating how the very real humanitarian and human security issues that are at the heart of many global conflicts today can be peacefully resolved.

For Love of Country Exhibition

For Love of Country Exhibition

For Love of Country will mark the Gallery’s contribution to Perth’s commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the First World War and the Australian Gallipoli campaign. Drawn from the State Art Collection, this exhibition presents a compelling mix of historical works from the First and Second World Wars, together with contemporary works that reflect on wider issues and conflicts.

Freedom of Entry

Freedom of Entry

Granting of Freedom of Entry upon military units is mostly ceremonial and gives the right of general entry to the unit to parade through the streets on ceremonial occasions. Since this year is the Centenary of the Submarine Force, the City of Fremantle has invited the Submarine Force from HMAS Stirling to request a Freedom of Entry and thus, parade proudly through our streets.

Fremantle Voices of the Great War: Book Launch

Over 3000 men and women from the Fremantle region served in the Great War of 1914-1919. Fremantle Voices of the Great War tells the story of their war service through their own accounts taken from diaries, letters, oral histories and over two hundred photos, many never before published.

The Returned & Services League of Australia WA Branch Incorporated (RSL WA) is proud to present Perth at the Outbreak of War, a travelling exhibition created to celebrate how Perth lived in the lead up to and during wartime, both WWI and WWII.

Recreating the iconic pyramid picture

The Western Australian Genealogical Society (WAGS) intends to photograph the relatives of Western Australia's 11th Battalion who were iconically captured in the pyramid photograph taken in Egypt on the Great Pyramid of Giza. The photograph was captured on 10 January 1915 and so it is fitting, that 100 years later, hundreds of relatives of these men will come together in Kings Park for a photograph of their own.

Remember Me: The Lost Diggers of Vignacourt

 

The small French village of Vignacourt was always behind the front lines. For much of the First World War it was a staging point, casualty clearing station and recreation area for troops of all nationalities moving up to and then back from the battlefields on the Somme. Remember me: the lost diggers of Vignacourt tells the story of how one enterprising photographer took the opportunity of this passing traffic to establish a business taking portrait photographs.

RSL WA, McDonalds Community Cinemas (formerly Movies by Burswood) and Universal Pictures are thrilled to announce the WA Première of one of 2014s most anticipated films, THE WATER DIVINER, on Wednesday December 3 at Grand Cinemas Warwick.

The annual ANZAC Day Derby between fierce rivals, South Fremantle and East Fremantle Football Clubs, is named in honour of Fremantle war hero Sir Hughie Edwards. Edwards is a former South Fremantle footballer and WA Governor.

Submarine Centenary

Submarine Centenary

Along with the centenary of the Great War, 2014 marks the centenary of Submarines in Australia. To commemorate their 100 year history, a number of activities, conferences and commemorative services have been organised in Fremantle this November. A fitting location as Western Australia is the home of Australia's Submarine Force (SUBFOR) and remains a place of significance for the submarines and submariners who served and operated from Fremantle.

The Last Gentlemen of War

The Last Gentlemen of War

The Last Gentlemen of War recreates the events of an extraordinary battle in 1914. The first HMAS Sydney met the German light cruiser SMS Emden at the Cocos Islands. It was a decisive victory for the Royal Australian Navy in its first-ever wartime engagement, but SMS Emden also deserved her fame. This compelling exhibition speaks of the tributes that flowed to both the victor and the vanquished.

The people of Fremantle (including the greater Fremantle area) are proud to be part of the ANZAC Centenary commemorations and to have the opportunity to honour and pay respect to those who have and are serving our nation as part of the Armed Forces. ANZAC Centenary events will embrace the themes: 'Commemorate, Contemplate and Educate'.

Eight hundred and forty-nine is the number of servicemen who lived in the greater Fremantle area, embarked in Fremantle on transport ships that would take them to far away fields, and they are the ones that never returned.
